  • Learning at Rabun Gap

    Fostering Growth & Personal Development
Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School offers a classical liberal arts curriculum and a wide array of cultural engagement to our global community of learners.
At Rabun Gap, students are encouraged to engage their curiosity and expand their horizons. Our faculty are passionate about their subjects and dedicated to student success. They will challenge you, believe in you, and inspire you.

We encourage natural curiosity through holistic teaching and demonstrate that discovery and learning are lifelong pursuits. We believe a student’s education is far broader and richer than what is learned in the classroom; however, the formal aspects of the classroom compose the core from which a student’s education develops.

At Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School, we operate three separate divisions that often come together for cross-curricular learning opportunities. It's common to see our Lower School students reading with their Upper School Reading Buddy, who is a boarding student from across the world. Our Middle School students invite Upper School science classes to view their annual capstone projects. Community defines Rabun Gap, and it permeates into our classrooms for truly engaging and meaningful educational experiences.

What makes academics unique at Rabun Gap?

Hands-on Learning Experiences

Rabun Gap students learn by doing. Our 1,400 acre campus provides a classroom without walls where experiential learning opportunities abound. Students help harvest honey from on-campus hives and study the effects of forest fires on surrounding mountain land. They build castles, launch rockets, write books, design toys, and cook recipes from around the world. Our faculty believes in taking learning beyond facts and figures to foster imaginative exploration in all subjects.

Global Education

Rabun Gap truly is the world in one place. We teach students how to be global citizens who stretch beyond the familiar to understand other cultures and beliefs. Students begin cultural and world language study in Lower School. Because we are a boarding school, students across divisions have the chance to interact with their peers and faculty members from 50+ countries and 15 states.

One-on-One Student Support

We want all of our students to be successful in the academic environment. Our dedicated student support faculty are always available to help, whether it be grasping a difficult algebra concept or learning phonics-based reading techniques. In the Upper and Middle Schools, students attend tutorials each week where they can meet one-on-one with teachers for extra help. The Teaching and Learning Center offers a Math Lab and quiet study space. We also offer additional academic support at the Lower School, led by our Learning Specialist.

Kim Buice, Upper School humanities teacher

"I regularly sit in the middle of a room full of teenagers who are engaging in respectful dialogue about potentially incendiary topics - conversations that I rarely see playing out respectfully in the 'real world.' That is what I love about Rabun Gap. This is a community that empowers teachers to ask difficult questions to classrooms of students who are learning to answer them."
Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School is a private, coeducational day and boarding school for grades Pre-K through 12. Centrally located between Atlanta, GA, Greenville, SC, and Asheville, NC, we prepare young people for college, career, and a lifetime of leadership and service.
