Calculus class uses skills in real-world, applied project

Students worked with a local grading company to calculate what it would take to level a hill on campus.
Calculus students put their knowledge to a real-world test as a part of a unique applied learning project.

Students used calculus concepts to create a bid to remove a mound of dirt on campus. They were presented with a proposal to remove the mound to create more housing on campus. The math students had to calculate the volume of the hill using what they'd learned in class, then determine how much they would quote for the removal.

Students worked with local contractor Hunnicutt Grading and Director of Facilities John Lumsden during the process.
