  • When can students start playing on competitive teams?

Student-athletes can begin competing at the Middle School level in sixth grade. Varsity teams are typically limited to upperclassmen and elite student-athletes, but there are opportunities for students, starting in seventh grade, to compete at the junior varsity and varsity levels. The NCISAA allows 7th-12th to compete in varsity sports.
  • Are there extra fees for athletics?

There is no extra cost to participate in the athletic program. School uniforms, meals on away trips, and other costs associated with basic equipment, competition, and practices are covered by the School.

Each season, student-athletes have the opportunity to purchase optional Eagles sportswear and gear through our partnership with Adidas.

Cost for summer programs, camps, college visits, and training outside of the Rabun Gap program may come with additional costs.
  • What teams do you play?

Our varsity and JV teams participate in the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association. We compete in the Carolinas Athletic Association conference for most sports, which includes Asheville School, Christ School, Asheville Christian, and Carolina Day. Teams balance a schedule of both home and away games appropriate for each sport.

For non-league games, Eagles teams compete with competitive public and private high schools across Western North Carolina, North Georgia, and Upstate South Carolina. Our Middle School teams are a part of the TriState Athletic conference and regularly compete against middle schools located less than one hour from Rabun Gap.
  • What colleges have your student-athletes attended?

We have built a strong history of sending our student-athletes to top college programs across the nation, including Michigan, Virginia Tech, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, Minnesota, Northwestern, Davidson, Tulane, Embry-Riddle, Northeastern, and Rhodes. We also have several alumni playing professionally.

Check out our Eagles at the Next Level page to see all of our college athletes.
  • What athletic training services do you offer?

Safety is a top priority for our student-athletes. We have two full-time athletic trainers on staff and a training room for services located in our gym. Our trainers are on site at every home game to support our players, as well as visiting teams. The AT team provides ongoing rehab and training services for all student-athletes at Rabun Gap.
  • How do coaches help student-athletes prepare for opportunities in college?

Our athletic program is built to prepare student-athletes for the next level. Rabun Gap coaches work very closely with college-aspiring athletes, connecting them with coaches for ultimate college exposure, while working within our academic program to make sure student-athletes are excelling in the classroom.

We have a robust strength and conditioning program for all student-athletes that simulates a college athletic environment and builds the foundation necessary to compete at the college level. Students can participate in strength and conditioning classes during the school day.

During the offseason, we offer sport-specific conditioning programs. Coaches also regularly host skill development sessions led by our coaching staff, college coaches, former players, and experts in the sport.
Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School is a private, coeducational day and boarding school for grades Pre-K through 12. Centrally located between Atlanta, GA, Greenville, SC, and Asheville, NC, we prepare young people for college, career, and a lifetime of leadership and service.
