  • A Legacy

    for the Future
    Hodgson Hall is the beating heart of academic life at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School. Perched high atop a hill overlooking Highway 441 and the Wolffork Valley, this iconic structure was built almost 100 years ago. Nine decades of alumni have walked its halls, learned in its classrooms, and taken their graduation photos on the front steps. Hodgson Hall sits at the intersection of the school’s history and its future, and now is the time to restore and renovate the building so it can continue to be a beacon of education for the next generation of students.

We will preserve the historic architecture of Hodgson Hall while adding much-needed safety and technological upgrades that will bring the building into the 21st century.

  • Academics

    • Additional classrooms and multiple small meeting spaces will offer more areas to support the applied learning curriculum.
    • Upgraded electrical, wifi, and hardware will create a more ubiquitous computing environment to support our faculty in innovative teaching and develop increased skills among our students.
    • Modular furniture in classrooms will support group work and applied learning projects helping to grow students from learners to leaders in the classroom and beyond.

  • Collaboration and Mentoring

    • A newly established student commons area will create a landing spot during the academic day for students to do group work, independent study, and connect with faculty members.
    • A grand terrace will be added to the front porch facing Highway 441 to create additional spaces for classes and group work.  The three-level terrace will be the hub of activity to support a living and learning environment for students and campus families.
    • Two faculty workrooms will support collaboration and applied learning curriculum development.
    • Smaller seminar rooms and huddle rooms will facilitate opportunities for greater group work among students, faculty mentoring, and parent conferences to support student development.

  • Health & Safety

    • A sprinkler system will be added to the building to ensure fire safety.
    • Electrical and wifi upgrades to the building will enable enhanced safety features including access-controlled doors, cameras, and outdoor lighting.
    • Special attention will be given to increase accessibility with widened entries, ramps, updated restrooms on each level, and other accessibility improvements.

  • Sustainability

    • A DOAS fresh air exchange system coupled with a centralized HVAC system will enable preconditioned air to enter the building allowing for increased comfort, reduction in energy consumption, and cost savings.
    • LED lighting continues to be replaced throughout the building to reduce energy consumption and the installation of occupancy sensors will offer further benefits.
    • Decisions regarding materials, finishes, and fixtures will be made with consideration for the high standards in energy efficiency and environmental impact. 
    • Slate tiles and replaced doors will be repurposed for future use rather than disposed of.

    As alumni of Rabun Gap, Hodgson Hall is close to our hearts. Seeing it at the top of the hill today feels like home. Just like we did years ago, students today gather for class, attend study hall, meet with teachers, and visit with friends within its walls. We were fortunate to spend our high school years in this building and are grateful to those who built it a century ago. We are excited to support the restoration of Hodgson Hall so that the next century of Rabun Gap’s students can share the same experience.

    My work in our school's archives gives me an opportunity to be reminded of my days in Hodgson Hall during the 1960s.In the archives, I see photos of many different views of our main building.
     
    As I have so many memories of being in Hodgson Hall, I desire for the current and future students of RGNS to experience this special place in a way that provides the best educational opportunities and experiences possible. As I have those special teachers who helped me develop, I wish for this and future generations to have their special teachers and staff members who help them develop.

We are excited to support the restoration and educational enhancements to this beautiful building that holds so much history at Rabun Gap. We know how important this project is for future students and faculty, they deserve a place to learn and teach with innovation and educational excellence.

    The Hodgson Hall campaign has both an important symbolic purpose -- preserving the iconic building that stands on a hill for all to see as a beacon of learning -- and a practical one as well: as the main classroom building for the school, it needed and richly deserves preservation and enhancement, for the sake of the students it serves ... so we were honored to give.

  • Steve Gilliam '66

    Hodgson Hall, built through the generosity of visionary philanthropists to educate children,  has been the gathering place for those students for 100 years. It has withstood the test of time on top of that hill as a symbol of their vision.  As alumni who walked these halls, we need to make sure it is fully prepared for the next century of students.
