  • The story of Hodgson Hall

    is the story of Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School.
Hodgson Hall is one of the oldest and most iconic buildings on the campus of Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School. The school's main academic building represents the successful merger of Rabun Gap Industrial School and the Nacoochee Institute to create Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School. 

The first school building at Rabun Gap Industrial School was lost to fire in 1926. That same year, the Nacoochee Institute, located about 35 miles away from the Rabun Gap campus, also suffered a massive loss of their building due to fire. As both school boards began to contemplate raising funds to rebuild, the idea of merging the two schools arose. However, they needed a building. 

The cornerstone for the new school building was laid on November 12, 1927. Work was steady and swift, and the School was able to open for classes in the fall of 1928.

Since the building opened for classes in 1928, Hodgson Hall has been the main hub for academics at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School. Every year the graduating class takes a photo on the front steps of Hodgson Hall.

Hodgson Hall has been a part of the Rabun Gap experience for nine generations of alumni. The renovation and restoration of this iconic building will ensure Hodgson Hall remains for generations of Rabun Gap students to come.

    As alumni of Rabun Gap, Hodgson Hall is close to our hearts. Seeing it at the top of the hill today feels like home. Just like we did years ago, students today gather for class, attend study hall, meet with teachers, and visit with friends within its walls. We were fortunate to spend our high school years in this building and are grateful to those who built it a century ago. We are excited to support the restoration of Hodgson Hall so that the next century of Rabun Gap’s students can share the same experience.

    My work in our school's archives gives me an opportunity to be reminded of my days in Hodgson Hall during the 1960s.In the archives, I see photos of many different views of our main building.
     
    As I have so many memories of being in Hodgson Hall, I desire for the current and future students of RGNS to experience this special place in a way that provides the best educational opportunities and experiences possible. As I have those special teachers who helped me develop, I wish for this and future generations to have their special teachers and staff members who help them develop.

We are excited to support the restoration and educational enhancements to this beautiful building that holds so much history at Rabun Gap. We know how important this project is for future students and faculty, they deserve a place to learn and teach with innovation and educational excellence.

    The Hodgson Hall campaign has both an important symbolic purpose -- preserving the iconic building that stands on a hill for all to see as a beacon of learning -- and a practical one as well: as the main classroom building for the school, it needed and richly deserves preservation and enhancement, for the sake of the students it serves ... so we were honored to give.

    Hodgson Hall, built through the generosity of visionary philanthropists to educate children,  has been the gathering place for those students for 100 years. It has withstood the test of time on top of that hill as a symbol of their vision.  As alumni who walked these halls, we need to make sure it is fully prepared for the next century of students.
