Sam is a day student from Franklin, NC and has been at Rabun Gap for three years. He will be graduating this Sunday and will attend Bellarmine University where he plans to get his doctorate in physical therapy.

Why did you choose to attend Rabun Gap?
I chose Rabun Gap because of its academic strengths. Knowledge is the key to unlocking your future potential.

Where will you be attending college and what will you be studying?
I will be attending Bellarmine University to get my doctorate in physical therapy.

What makes Rabun Gap special to you?
I came to Rabun Gap at the beginning of my sophomore year; I immediately felt welcomed into the community and have ever since. Not only have I felt welcomed, but I am also challenged and pushed to reach my fullest potential in life every day by my peers and teachers.

Rabun Gap has led me to be able to meet people from all over the world; I come to school every morning and get to interact with someone that lives on the other side of the planet. How cool is that!

Tell us about a time at Rabun Gap where you’ve had to stretch beyond your comfort zone and how you were supported in that time.
At the beginning of my junior year, I could not even fathom being the leading others. That same year, I was encouraged to put my leadership skills to the test. I became the President of the Business Club and President of the Chess Club. Taking that initial leap into my leadership was scary, but I had peers to walk with me every step of the way.

Fast forward to this year, my leadership skills took off. I am currently the President of the Upper School, President of the Business Club, President of the Chess Club, and a Prefect.

About a month ago, I decided to apply the leadership skills I acquired over the last two years and start my own business. I now have a successful online marketing agency. All of this would not have been possible if I was not encouraged and pushed to take the initial leap.

What is your favorite memory from Rabun Gap?
One of my favorite memories is winning the conference on Varsity Baseball for the last two years. It was an honor to be on a team with such great friends!

What were your extracurriculars and what did you like most about them?
I have had a plethron of extracurriculars here at Rabun Gap. Some of these include: Varsity Wrestling, Varsity Baseball, ESP, Intramural Sports, outside business ventures, volunteer work around the community, etc.

What was your favorite class and why?
My favorite class has probably been Bible and World Religions. I was naïve to other cultures before this class; after taking this class, I grew to respect other religions other than my own.

Which Rabun Gap teachers and/or coaches had the biggest impact on you during your time here?
Coach Clark Wright has had the most significant impact on me during my time here. He has taught and encouraged me to be a better person both on and off the baseball field. Whether he is aware of it or not, he has been such a superb mentor to me, and I am thankful for people like him at this school! Thank you, Coach Wright!

What advice would you give another student who is interested in attending Rabun Gap?
Take advantage of the diversity of this school. Yes, education here is nearly one of a kind. But I have learned so much about other cultures from being here. I have friends from every continent of the world; what a blessing! I genuinely believe that if everyone could learn about different cultures firsthand, then our globe would be in unity with one another.

How do you feel your time at Rabun Gap has prepared you for your future?
I could write a book on this question, but I will keep it short. I have learned leadership skills, communication skills, and general education that will aid me in standing out at the next level. All of these acquired dexterities will assist me in reaching my full potential throughout life.
