Rabun Gap Stories

College Profile: Ashton and Austin Jones

Twin brothers Ashton and Austin Jones may be a house divided when it comes to their college decisions (Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia), but they both agree that experiences at Rabun Gap led them to their dream schools.
Ashton plans to major in business construction at Georgia Tech, with plans to operate his own construction company after graduating. His career goal is to incorporate more sustainable and efficient practices in the construction industry in rural Northeast Georgia.

"My ambitions as an aspiring building construction major stemmed from my involvement in activities at Rabun Gap such as the STEAM program and technical theatre," said Ashton "These ambitions led me to pursue a civil engineering internship last summer under an alumnus of Georgia Tech which left me without a doubt in my mind that it was the school for me to attend."

Austin will study animal science at the University of Georgia's College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. He aspires to open his own practice as a large animal veterinarian.

"My AP Environmental Science class is really where my interest in animal science sparked, and then I took an internship with a large dairy company over the summer. The combination of these things - and many other factors - are what led me to find my true passion which is animals," said Austin.

Both brothers pointed to their experiences at Rabun Gap as beneficial to their next step in college.

"Rabun Gap has provided me with an environment that has been rigorous yet encouraging, which has enabled me to pursue various interests of mine in fields such as engineering and construction. Through this complex environment, the school has not only prepared me for the strict academic standards I will be upheld to in college but also helped me determine which path I should follow when seeking higher education," said Ashton

"Academically, I feel prepared and ready for the university level because of the rigorous course load at Rabun Gap," said Austin. "The college counseling provided at Rabun Gap has also prepared me for what to expect in college and the challenges that I may face."

Ashton and Austin are day students from Lakemont, GA, and have attended Rabun Gap since seventh grade. Read more about Ashton and Austin in the first of our College Profiles featuring select students from the Class of 2022 as we lead up to College Decision Day on May 2.
