Student Profile: Fafa Nartey '24

Meet Fafa Nartey '24! Fafa is an honor roll student and a Gap Guide.  She is a boarding student from Accra, Ghana and it is her second year at Rabun Gap.

Why did you choose to attend Rabun Gap? 
The close knit community of our school and the guided independence of the faculty members. And the large diversity of not only the student body but our community as a whole. 

 

What makes Rabun Gap special to you?
The friendships I have formed, the teachers and faculty members and all the other members of our community who are constantly there for me. The people who have made great impacts on my life that I would have never met if it wasn’t for Rabun Gap.

 

What is your favorite memory from Rabun Gap?
There isn’t one specific memory of Rabun Gap that is my favorite. But to be lucky enough to call people from all corners of the earth, family is one of the best things Rabun Gap has given me. If I had to pinpoint one memory it will be sitting in the George common room on a random Tuesday evening. 

 

What do you like most about your extracurriculars?
Making new friends and forming new bonds outside of the classroom and dorm. Giving me an opportunity to exert myself in more ways than just in the classroom. Providing safe spaces for me to express myself. 

 

Tell us what it's like to be a Gap Guide and what's your favorite part about being a Gap Guide.
A Gap Guide is like an ambassador of the student body to prospective families. It is an opportunity for students to show families their school from their point of view. My favorite part of being a Gap Guide is showing off my school to prospective students and families.

 

Which Rabun Gap teachers and/or coaches have had the biggest impact on you during your time here?
Ms. Walters has had a huge impact on my sophomore year. She has been one of the most supportive dorm parents I have seen. She truly cares for each and every single one of the girls in my dorm and she treats us all like her own children. She makes sure I am always on top of everything and is always ready to provide me with extra help when I need it. She has been there for me on countless occasions and I will never stop singing her praises.

 

What do you enjoy most about being a boarding student?
What I enjoy the most about being a boarder are the bonds that you form. I will never be as close to any other 20+ girls as the girls I currently live with in my dorm. The experiences you will go through as boarding students are not easy and the girls I live with make it a tiny bit easier. You will go through similar situations with the people you live with and nobody else will understand you the way the girls I live with understand me. 

 

What advice would you give another student who is interested in boarding and attending Rabun Gap?
Put yourself out there. If there is one word to describe our community it will be inclusive. This is because, unlike your conventional high school, Rabun Gap manages to constantly keep a close knit community.
