MADFest 2021 celebrates student talent

Student performers showcased their talents in the virtual premiere of MADFest 2021 on February 13, 2021.

MADFest is Rabun Gap’s annual celebration of the arts. This year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, students recorded their submissions for a special video of performing arts that launched on the Rabun Gap Arts Youtube Channel. There were more than 75 entries in the MADFest performing arts categories this year, which included dance, cirque, drama, instrumental music, vocal music, and film.

This year’s MADFest had an impressive lineup of judges with decades of professional experience in the performing arts space. Judges included:
  • Drama - Bill Patti, General Manager of the Chez Theatre in New York
  • Cirque - Waverly Jones, professional aerial and cirque artist of Empyrean Arts in Asheville
  • Film - Hal Jacobs, award-winning documentary filmmaker in Decatur, GA focused on social justice, environmentalism, and raising the voices of marginalized people.
  • Vocal - James Rocco, Broadway veteran who has performed in Cats, Wind and the Willows, and Jesus Christ Superstar
  • Instrumental - Valerie Gerbert, accomplished instrumentalist who has traveled with Broadway tours including Anastasia, The Lion King, and Cinderella
  • Dance - DJ Salisbury, Broadway performer in The Will Rogers Follies, The Wizard of Oz, and Zombie Prom.
Student winners will be announced in the spring and visual arts submissions will be showcased at that time. Follow @rabungaparts on Instagram for more MADFest content and updates from the arts department!
