The history of Rabun Gap's school store

Learn the history of the Rabun Gap school store.
The Rabun Gap school store has a long and storied past dating back more than 70 years. In 1941, the school store first opened its doors in a humble log cabin that also housed the music room, crafts, folk dancing, and farm family supplies.

From the 1950s through 1984, the school store was relocated to the Hodgson Hall until the Morris Brown Student Center was opened and the school store moved to the lower level. Three years later, when the Morris Brown building became the science building, the store was moved once again to the lower floor of the old gymnasium, which is now the Evelyne Sheats Lower School; it was relocated three times within the building itself.

When the old gymnasium underwent remodeling in the late 80s, the store was once again moved, this time to the Jackson Building which had been faculty apartments; this building now houses IT, the Health Center, and a residential apartment. After the remodeling was complete, the store was moved back to the lower east side of the old gymnasium building which then became the Welcome Center, school store, and bookstore.

In 2001, the store was relocated for a short time to the Arts and Technology building to a lower level room where snacks and other items can now be purchased during performances in the Rearden Theater.

In 2017 the store was moved into an apartment in the back of what was then the Addie Corn Ritchie Dining Hall. After the opening of the new Richard and John Woodruff Dining Hall, the store found its current home in the main area of the Karina L. Miller Student Center.

While it has changed locations many times, the school store continues to serve the needs of the faculty, students, and parents at Rabun Gap by supplying a large variety of apparel and accessories. It's a great place to get Rabun Gap gear, snacks, and school supplies for the new school year.
