Eighth-grade visits Washington DC

The eighth-grade class made a trip to Washington DC over October 21-25 to explore the sites and learn about our nation's history.
Extension Week at the Middle School took place over the week of October 21-25 and the Class of 2024 took a trip to Washington DC to learn about our nation’s history first hand.

The purpose of the trip was to tie in lessons and research students have completed in their history and English classes and to see the broad scope of primary resources that are available. The hope is that having access to these amazing resources will improve their study. The bonding and shared experience the students received while on the trip was an added bonus.

The eighth-graders and chaperones toured several national monuments and museums during their stay in Washington DC. In the Native American History Museum, students were able to explore the story and struggles of Native people as they fought for nationhood and rights. While touring the African American History and Culture Museum, the students learned the story of Africans in America starting in 1400 to the present day and how their story has been an integral part of our collective history. At the Holocaust Museum, they were each given a card with the personal story of a person who went through the horror of the Holocaust as they explored the timeline of this world-altering event. Students saw monuments and memorials to our nation’s significant leaders and the wars that have shaped America and the world and at Arlington on the National Mall. These monuments allowed the students to witness the stark reminder of the vast sacrifices our nation has made for our freedoms.
