College Counseling expands horizons a home and abroad

College Counselers visit universities overseas and help students at home transition from high school to college life.
Ms. Jennifer Jones and Ms. Cheryl Barber, college counselors in the College Counseling office have had a busy March!

During spring break, they visited competitive universities in Scotland, England, and Ireland, and were able to share dinner with Edmundo Ortiz ’18, who is currently studying in the UK as part of his Gap Year.  Counselors learned about the college programs of study, admission processes, and international opportunities and experiences for our students, including how certain institutions may be a fit for Rabun Gap students who increasingly apply to, are accepted at, and attend universities all over the world.

Ms. Barber toured Scottish colleges including University of Glasgow, University of Stirling, and University of Aberdeen while Ms. Jones visited Trinity College (Dublin), University College Dublin, Maynooth University, Mary Immaculate College, and University of Limerick.  Together, counselors visited University of Edinburgh in Scotland as well as colleges in London: Kings College, University of London, and London School of Economics.

College Counseling and the Upper School Academic Office have also launched a new “Bridging the Gap” workshop series featuring short sessions where upperclassmen are invited to hear from professionals at the college level as well as Rabun Gap alumni.  The goal of these sessions is to provide resources to seniors as they transition to the university level. Each session will allow students time for questions and follow up contacts.

The first session held on Friday, March 22, was on the topic of Gap Years. Edmundo Ortiz '18 (via video) and Avery Lumsden ‘16 gave a presentation on why they chose to take a gap year and shared their experiences with the students - both the pros and the cons.

Ortiz is currently at Eastbourne College as an ESU Scholar in the Secondary School Exchange program and is planning to attend Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine next year. Lumsden is a rising junior at the University of Georgia. She is an Environmental Economics and Management Major with a concentration in Sustainability.

Upcoming workshops include building working relationships with college professors, what college freshmen need to know about the first year, and relevant topics regarding personal responsibility.
