“That Little Spark” art exhibit creates a space that cultivates mindfulness and civility

The Blackbox art exhibit "That Little Spark" promotes civility.
The Blackbox in the Rearden Theater was transformed into a peaceful oasis on Thursday and Friday, October 11 - 12. Students were invited to attend during the day and the space was opened to the community in the evenings.

The room was darkened to appear like the night and lights twinkled about, giving the appearance of stars and lightning bugs. Playful, calming music played in the background. Several tent structures sat about the room, all lit up from the interior which made the white of the tent material glow with the color of the lights. Each of the tents provided the visitor with a moment of quiet mindfulness where they could touch, taste, feel and watch. Visitors were encouraged to move through the exhibit while listening to their conscience, with an awareness of themselves and of others. The hope is that the experience and the mindfulness it created would cultivate civility and that those who experienced it would find it peaceful and rejuvenating.

When Dr. Rachel Chaves, theatre and humanities teacher, was asked about how the idea for “That Little Spark” was developed, she said, “‘That Little Spark’ grew out of a conversation about civility. We spent time trying to figure out what civility actually was, and we bemoaned the lack of civility we saw in the world now and that has been experienced historically.  We settled on the idea of creating a space where people of all ages could seek refuge from incivility.”
