With a 3-3 record at midpoint in the season, the young Varsity Softball team has had a good start on the year.  With no seniors to lead the way, the starting lineup consists of only one junior and eight freshmen and sophomores.  Head Coach Cody Honeycutt attributes a large part of the team’s success to the offense.  “Improvement is being seen on a daily basis as the girls continue to work hard improving in the field.  They’re coming together as a team and the future is looking bright for the rest of the season and for the distant future,” he said.

The ladies started the season on the road against Cherokee, down four starters and forced to go to the bench.  “The girls came through like I asked and played hard for their first outing but fell short 4-23,” said Honeycutt.  The following day, they hosted Eagle Ridge in the first home game of the season and, for the first time in two years, picked up a 13-1 run-rule victory in the 5th inning.  Next up was an away game against Brevard where the Eagles faced a very good Blue Devils team, losing 0-15 in five innings.  Next was a home forfeit victory over Blue Ridge, followed by an exciting on-the-road win against Eagle Ridge when the bats came alive in the 6th inning.  The Lady Eagles traveled to Eagle Ridge for a rematch Tuesday where they faced an up and down battle throughout the game with Eagle Ridge coming out on top with an inside-the-park grand slam in the bottom of the 7th, ending the game with a 22-23 loss for the Eagles.

The last half of the schedule will not be easy, starting with a doubleheader at home against Swain County Thursday, but the Lady Eagles are ready for any challenge put in front of them as they continue to build for the future.  Go Eagles!
