Students at helm of Cirque Malvagio planning

A Q&A with students from the Cirque Planning Committee
Did you know this year's cirque performance is student-led? The Cirque Planning Committee has been working for months to develop a concept for the show, and they decided to create an original piece “Cirque Malvagio.” Read below to hear more from members of the Cirque Planning Committee, and be sure to purchase your tickets for the Feb. 16-17 showtimes at www.rabungap.org.

Why did you want to be a part of the Cirque Planning Committee?
“The Cirque Planning Committee is an organization put together by Mr. Lakey, Ms. Spoon, and Ms. Loveland to give students the opportunity to help create ideas for the upcoming show. Personally, I wanted to be a part of this group, because of the opportunity to be creative and imaginative with peers, developing our show into the marvelous piece of theatre it is.”
- Dorian Provencher ‘18 of Franklin, NC

What are you most excited about for the show?
“It is always exciting to see the new group of people that cirque attracts to the theater. Many of our cast members have never performed before, so it was great seeing them develop new skill set and grow as performers. I am excited to see them perform, as well as to present to audience some new skill we’ve been working on such as fire breathing, fabreze and Chinese pole (new apps) and flying harness.”
- Anja Racic ‘19 of Serbia

"I am most excited for my lyra solo. It is the first lyra solo that I have had during a show, and because this is my senior year, I put so much into it. I am so proud of what I have created with the act."
Zoe Owens '18 of Conyers, GA

What makes "Cirque Malvagio" unique? How did the planning committee decide on this show?
“Cirque Malvagio is unique because there is no script and there are many new apps that people have never seen. The planning committee decided on this because we wanted something to replicate movies and shows like ‘The Goonies’ and ‘Stranger Things’ and it has that kinda feel to it.”
- Olivia Tavolacci ‘19 of Atlanta, GA

What all is involved in getting the show ready?
“ To get ready for this show, we have rehearsed everyday after school for the past 4 months. Rehearsals consist of a whole cast warmup and stretch, then working on and blocking each act in the show. In rehearsals we have done everything from dancing to breathing fire to learning new skills to showcase in “Cirque Malvagio.” We have worked very hard for the past few months to have a wonderful show for audiences to enjoy. “
- Cydni Coppage ‘20 of Sky Valley, GA

What is your role?
"I’m a vocalist for the music part of this show, which is very exciting because this year Cirque has a strong group. I am also an scenic designer. I illustrated the patterns and designs for the set, which helps the directors to visualize the overall visual effects and style of the set."
- Jack Zhou ‘18 of China
