Faculty Friday: Jennifer Hill - Kindergarten

"I believe that a classroom should be a safe, caring community where children are free to speak their minds, blossom, and grow. I want the students in my classroom to feel loved and valued." Jennifer Hill.
Mrs. Jennifer Hill teaches kindergarten at The Lower School. Prior to joining the Rabun Gap family, Mrs. Hill served as the Education Director at The Little School. Before her time at The Little School, she worked in the Georgia public school system with kindergarten and second grade students. Mrs. Hill is a STEAM certified teacher and obtained her Master’s of Education degree before staying home to raise her son Davis '25 and daughter Carson '26. Jennifer and her husband Shane enjoy camping, kayaking, and hiking with their children.

How many years of experience do you have as a teacher? I have 10 years of combined teaching experience before and after staying home with my two children.

Why did you decide to become a teacher? I’ve always loved children. I love their little magical brains and they are the funniest human beings ever. I wanted to spend each day helping children unravel their uniqueness and gifts.  Having the summers off with my own children is definitely an added bonus!

What is your teaching philosophy? I believe that a classroom should be a safe, caring community where children are free to speak their minds, blossom, and grow. I want the students in my classroom to feel loved and valued. We all have so much to learn from each other, therefore I want  all of my students to feel as if they have a voice. Our days in Kindergarten are fun, encouraging, and full of exploring!

What do you enjoy the most about working at Rabun Gap? I love having the freedom to teach at the pace of my students. It is also amazing to be in a setting that encourages play and movement. Being on the Rabun Gap’s beautiful campus allows all of these things and more. It has been so amazing to be surrounded by like-minded professionals who enjoy teaching.

What were you like in high school? Believe it or not, I was quite shy and reserved. I had a handful of close friends and we were the epitome of innocent fun.

What inspires you? I am definitely inspired by positive thinkers and people who live in the moment.

What did you want to be when you were young? I wanted to be a mother first. And then honestly, a teacher.

What interests do you pursue outside of the classroom? My family loves to travel together. We’ve recently started mapping our adventures and this has sparked a bug to hit the highway any chance we get. We love the outdoors and trying new things. We’ve recently learned how to throw pottery together.

What are you known for? My super loud laugh. It’s good for the soul!

If you had $1000 to spend in four hours what would you do? I’d purchase four airline tickets and take my family on a cool surprise adventure!

If you could choose one amenity to add to the workplace, what would it be? I think it would be awesome to have a ropes course for the faculty and students on campus.  It would be perfect for team building and confidence boosting!

Is there anything else you would like to add? My family feels incredibly grateful to be a part of the Rabun Gap family. From a teacher and parent’s perspective there is definitely not a better match for our family. We love the diversity of people, the incredible learning opportunities, and the beautiful amenities here on campus.
