Faculty Friday: Cheryl Barber, Director of College Counseling

"I am proud of the accomplishments of the students I have served." Cheryl Barber.
Cheryl Barber has worked in the education field for over 13 years, beginning as a kindergarten teacher, moving to director of a church after-school tutoring and community liaison program, and eventually serving as Director of Admissions and Placement for a preparatory school in Atlanta. She is the wife of a Presbyterian minister and mother of three girls. Mrs. Barber has a deep appreciation for higher education and what it means to be well prepared. She currently works as the Director of College Counseling and with the counseling team to help ensure that families' needs are met. A significant part of her role is guiding and directing Rabun Gap graduates to appropriate colleges and universities throughout the country.

What do you like the most about your job? Working with students to create multiple possibilities for their future.

How do you define success? "I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have." Thomas Jefferson

What is the greatest success you have had in life? I don’t think I can define one event as the greatest success in life. I am proud of the family I have raised, I am proud of the accomplishments of the students I have served, and I am thankful to have been a small part of many successful moments in my life and in the life of others.

What inspires you? My Family

What is one of your weaknesses, and how are you working to improve it? Complacency. I have a wonderful life and I think it is important to enjoy each moment, but also continue to learn and grow through new experiences. In an effort to continue this growth, I look for ways to enhance my knowledge and education. I completed the UCLA College Counseling Practicum and this December I completed the Teachers College / Columbia University College Advising Program.

What’s one thing you couldn’t live without? My Family

What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this? Honestly, I can’t imagine doing anything else. I love all the different facets of my job.

What are you known for? Laughing

If you could choose one amenity to add to the workplace, what would it be? This may be pathetic, but I can’t think of one thing that is missing...Ok, maybe a yogurt machine. I love tart yogurt.
