The Lady Eagles traveled to Nantahala determined to bring home a win, and that they did. The ladies dropped the first set 23-25, but came back to win the second two, 25-11 and 15-8. With three contests on the schedule next week, their record stands at 1-2.
The ladies were excited as they exited the bus for a contest in the mountains of Nantahala on Thursday night. They carried their energy into the first set, but struggled to find any footing in the passing game. Reese Ward and Sarah Hicks did a nice job up front for the Eagles and tallied two kills combined in the first set. Catherine Rauers showed much improvement with her serve as she drove home a total of 9 service points in set one. However, Nantahala closed a 3 point lead by the Eagles late in the set as the Eagles failed to pass the ball well, and 14 total passing errors led to a late loss 23-25.
Finding the first loss tough to swallow, the ladies were determined to bounce back, and they did just that. Claren Spivey came out and served a fast 5 points, while Sarah Hicks followed with another 5. The Eagles jumped out to a 14-3 lead, and this time, they didn't look back, winning the set 25-11. With the momentum shifting in the Eagles favor, set 3 began much like the end of set one. The ladies tallied 5 passing errors from the start and immediately went down 5-0. Quick play from the back row finally got the ball back in Eagle hands, and again Claren Spivey, Catherine Rauers, and Isabella Crump got the Eagles back on top with their serving. Milli Watts, the Eagles youngest teammate, played impressive defense in set three, as she popped up many balls that kept rallies going. The Eagles slowly began to run away with set three, and with the score 14-8, Emma Duquette served a game point ace to seal the win for the Eagles 15-8.
Coach BySura had this to say after the game, "I know it is a win, and I am happy about that, but 30 total passing errors and 12 serving errors in a single contest is too many. It puts a knot in my stomach. The girls have a lot of work to do from this point on, and I hope this win gives them the confidence and motivation they need moving forward."
The Eagles have three contests next week. 2 away and 1 home. Record now is 1-2.
