Upper Schoolers enjoyed a student planned and led International Week over November 4-8.
Rabun Gap’s Global Awareness Panel hosted a week-long celebration of global and cultural diversity during International Week on November 4-8.
Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School is home to students from 50 different countries and International Week gives students a chance to share their culture with the community. Students planned and ran all of the activities this year.
The week kicked off with an Upper School Convocation in the Rearden Theater featuring Kahoot trivia, an international fashion show, a noodle eating contest, and songs from China and Vietnam.
During tutorials throughout the week, students participated in a variety of activities including trivia and an international craft fair. The craft fair featured Vietnamese handwriting, french ornaments, bracelet-making with beads, paper-cutting, origami, and calligraphy. Students also hosted a drum circle during the craft fair.
The big finale came Friday afternoon with music-themed Community Day stations throughout Hodgson Hall. Students from the regions of Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, North America, the Carribean Islands, and South America all gave presentations on music from their various countries. There were also stations for students to create TikTok videos and play Gaga ball. The students enjoyed an International Week Social on Friday night and a French cooking class on Saturday.
"At Rabun Gap, our everyday lives are full of finding similarities among our differences. With so many cultures, languages and backgrounds represented on one campus, it is important that we work hard to find our commonalities while also celebrating our diversity," said Ms. Lynda Ann Loring, Director of International Student Programs. "International week is an opportunity for students of other countries and languages to fully shine a light on their lives at home and the things that are so familiar and comfortable to them. This year, I have seen such pride and excitement from these students as they share their homes with their Rabun Gap family. It is another way that we are building one community among such a diverse student body."
