Sophomores explore local area and learn Rabun Gap history

Sophomores explore, learn and give back during their class experience.
The sophomore class has been on the go this week during their class experience by completing hands-on learning about the history of the local area and Rabun Gap, as well as giving back to the community. The group spent two days exploring Black Rock State Park, touring the Foxfire Museum, serving at Northeast Georgia Food Bank, and roaming campus on a Rabun Gap historical scavenger hunt.

While at Black Rock State Park, the sophomores had the chance to catch a glimpse of Clayton, GA from a birds-eye view at the overlook and hiked the Tennesee Rock Trail to experience some of the natural beauty that surrounds the campus. The Foxfire Museum was another stop on this trip, where students went back in time while exploring the historical structures and learning what life for early Appalachian settlers in the area looked like. Students also served at the Northeast Georgia Food Bank, unpacking boxes and helping to restock shelves.

Back on campus, having knowledge of the school’s history came in handy during the Rabun Gap scavenger hunt which began at the Alumni Heritage Center. Before beginning, the students had a surprise visit from founder Andrew Ritchie’s granddaughter Nanette Curran who shared about her family’s history with the school.

This trip was organized by Mr. Malot and Mme Shook.
