Seventh-graders take on Chattanooga

During Extention Week, the seventh graders traveled to Chattanooga for some experiential learning.
The seventh grade traveled to Chattanooga, TN for Extension Week over October 23-26 for a four day, three-night trip. The intent of the trip was to provide the students with a culminating field experience, one that would combine their sixth and seventh-grade educations through several hands-on, real-world activities. Mr. Johnathan BySura, lead teacher and Experiential Education Coordinator at the Middle School, led the trip and took the students on adventures in history, science, geography, and team building.

The group stayed in rustic cabins at Booker T. Washington State Park, a wonderful setting to enjoy nature and each other,  and made day trips out and around Chattanooga. They caved the dark caverns of Lookout Mountain, visited marine and terrestrial exhibits at the Tennessee Aquarium, blew their own glass at IGNIS Glass Studio, and participated in a unique seventh-grade activity called “The Amazing Race.” Students finished up the week with a trip to Young Harris College in Hiawassee, GA to visit the planetarium.

“This is a remarkable experience for the students,” said Mr. BySura. “They were transformed by the time the week was over through critically reflecting on their past two years and having had the opportunity to develop lasting relationships with their peers.”
