Second grade transforms classroom for candy based science experiments

The Lower School students transformed their classroom into Candyland for a day full of science experiments.
Second grade transformed their classroom on Monday, May 7 into Candyland for a day full of candy based scientific experiments.

The Lower School students experimented with gases as they added different types of candy to Coca-Cola. When the carbon dioxide mixed with the sugary candy it created enough gas to fill a balloon that was attached to the top of the Coke bottle.

The stickyness of candy was also tested. Second graders learned that the air bubbles and the amount of sugar in recipes creates the soft and sticky features of candy. If the air bubbles were not inside the candy it would be hard like a jolly rancher.

Second graders were so excited to explore matter through hands-on experiments and to become engineers by designing and creating cars, boats, and learning through trial and error.
