Record number of Operation Christmas Child boxes collected

Students packed 489 shoebox gifts for Christmas outreach project.
Rabun Gap students packed a record number of 489 Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes this year, spreading the spirit of Christmas to children around the world.

Operation Christmas Child is a  missions outreach project that helps bring joy and hope to children around the world through gift-filled shoeboxes and the good news of God’s love through His Son Jesus Christ.  Since 1993, more than 135 million shoeboxes have been packed, shipped, and delivered in more than 150 countries and territories.

Each division at Rabun Gap held packing parties in November to assemble the boxes. Mrs. Evelyne Sheats even stopped by to help students at the Evelyne Sheats Lower School with their packing party. The division with the most shoeboxes will be announced after Thanksgiving, and will earn the “Golden Shoebox” award.

A total of $2,158.68 was raised by students and faculty to help with shipping costs and items for the shoe boxes. The Upper School also received a generous donation from local resident Linda Wester, who brought 18 bags of items to pack into the shoeboxes at the Upper School packing party.

Faculty member Mrs. Anne Shook coordinated the project at Rabun Gap and served as the relay center coordinator for the county.

“I am so proud of our community and Mrs. Shook for their work with Operation Christmas Child,” said Head of School Dr. Anthony Sgro. “Operation Christmas Child encapsulates core Rabun Gap values of global community and Christian love. We’re happy to be a part of such an impactful project, and we continue to pray for the children who receive these gifts.”

Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School was also the Operation Christmas Child drop-off location for Rabun County. Many students and faculty helped take in shoe boxes from local churches and organizations during National Collection Week on Nov. 13-20.
