Eagles come up short losing in two sets to Cullowhee

Eagles claw it out with the weekend's tournament champion team Cullowhee Valley, but come up short losing in two sets.
The Eagles traveled to compete against the tournament champions from the past weekend who didn't lose a single game in the JCI tournament. The girls knew they had to step up their game, and that is exactly what they did. The Eagle offense looked focused in the first set putting down 4 solid kills from Claren Spivey and Reese Ward combined. Reese bounced back from a tough Saturday, and looked sharp all game long. Lucy Barry came up big with 2 blocks and a kill and the Eagles were rolling in set one, keeping the game close and often holding the lead. In the final points, the Eagles would miss 3 serves in a row, opening the door for Cullowee, and Cullowee capitalized on these errors. The Eagles fell in a shootout, 26-24 in set one.

Set two shaped up much like set one. Points began to pile up for Cullowee early, and they jumped out to a quick 9-5 lead. However, the Eagles clawed their way back on tough defense from Ava Chordegian, who passed well all evening. With the score tied 11-11, the ladies continued to dominate the passing, and hitting game. They found themselves up 13-11 when they started to make some minor back row passing mistakes and once again, quickly lost the lead. As has been the case all year, they simply couldn't close the second set out as they missed 4 late serve attempts, and also lost the momentum that was with them. They would fall to Cullowee in a battle to the bitter end, 23-25 to end the season.

Coach BySura had this to say after the game, "Hands down, this was the teams best effort and best overall play of the season. I had veterans making good decisions, and I had a new middle hitter in Ella Jane Dow learning the game of volleyball on every play tonight. Our back up middle hitters have done a nice job filling in for our injured starter. I am confident that we've built a championship caliber team for next season, and I am sure that these young ladies won't disappoint when they take the court next year. It's a bright future for these young players. My best to you all."
