Rabun Gap welcomes new Director of Orchestra Programs Allegra Boggess to lead its music department.

Boggess has gained significant international experiences before touching down in Rabun Gap. A native of Denver, Colorado, Boggess decided to continue her life passions after graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from the University of Colorado in 2007.

I really wanted to find a way to combine my love of traveling with my love of music.  This led me first to teaching music for a year at Shanti Bhavan, a school for disadvantaged children in rural southern India, and then later to teaching music for five years at the first and only music school in Afghanistan – the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM).” Boggess said.

Having experienced the power of music on different continents and various countries, Boggess said that her experiences in Afghanistan were among the most interesting in her life.

“Under Taliban rule in 1990, an entire generation of young people never had access to music. I was lucky enough to be hired as a piano and oboe teacher at the only music school in Afghanistan, which was founded by an amazing and visionary Afghan musicologist Dr. Ahmad Sarmast. His school is doing incredible work providing music education to Afghan children regardless of their gender, ethnicity, religious sect, or socio-economic circumstances. I was truly honored to work there for five years and be a part of this incredible revival.” she said.

As the Director of Orchestra Programs at Rabun Gap, Boggess will direct the Upper School orchestra, band, and choir. She will also assist with the musicals and other assigned activities.

“I am hoping to grow the music program as much as I can and provide a platform for RGNS students to experience the joy of music and creative expression.” said Boggess.

She is eager to user her international experiences and connect with the diverse student body at RGNS. “I’m also really looking forward to learning and arranging music from different students’ home countries.” she said.
