Congratulations to Subin Eem '17 for being selected to participate in Jan Fest (January Festival of Instrumental Music) sponsored by the University of Georgia on January 19-22.

Subin was auditioned by the UGA professor of flute (who tried to recruit her for the UGA music department) and was placed first chair in one of the six bands composed of over 750 student participants from the southern region. She played a flute solo in the opening number of her band's concert.

Subin said this was the first band she ever played in which numbered approximately 165 members including 23 flutes and 30 clarinets. A total of 150 flutes from all the bands participated in the audition process. Her band also had a full complement of all the standard instruments: oboes, bassoons, French horns, trumpets, trombones, saxophones, baritone horns, euphoniums, tubas, and percussion. It was an impressive band as were all the others.

In addition to attending rehearsals and a flute seminar for all flutists, she also had the opportunity to attend numerous concerts presented by outstanding high school, college and community groups. Tara Winds, a nationally recognized community band from Atlanta, presented an excellent concert. Those concerts included two professional soloists and well-known composer/clinician Robert W. Smith as a guest conductor.
