  • A Collaborative Experience

    of Artistic Expression
The Rabun Gap Theatre and Film Program allows students to develop performance skills, story-telling, and artistic expression. As a culmination of all the different artistic disciplines, our Theatre and Film programs serve as core opportunities to collaborate between music, dance, technology, and visual arts.

Performance and Drama

Performance classes at Rabun Gap teach applicable beginning and intermediate-advanced skills with a focus on creating productions. Classes are fully immersed in this project-based process; students devise and script the Cirque production, as well as direct short plays. Upper School students regularly perform in One Act/Blackbox productions, Mainstage plays, and musicals. The program participates annually in the Georgia Theatre Conference and has garnered numerous awards and accolades. At the Middle School, students can choose to take a performance elective class, developing confidence and basic skills for the stage, while also participating in the Middle School musical.

Technical Theatre

Rabun Gap prides itself on allowing students to have ownership over the productions and events every year. With guidance and supervision, students run sound, lights, and backstage crews for every event in the Rearden Theater. Sets, lights and costumes are traditionally co-designed by students and give the opportunity to apply an artistic perspective towards a practical application. This program teaches life skills such as tool usage, budgeting, planning, and scheduling - teaching it all in a hands-on, project-based application.

Musical Theatre

Aspiring musical performers can get their start on stage through Rabun Gap’s award-winning musical theatre program. The musical theatre program combines the arts of drama, music, and dance to produce a large-scale mainstage musical every year. Rabun Gap has earned awards for both its performers and technical crew several times over the years, primarily at the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards. Recent shows have included “Cabaret,” “Pirates of Penzance,” and “The Robber Bridegroom.”

Film

Rabun Gap film classes combine artistic expression, storytelling, and practical technology. Students create short film projects as they learn the production process and software. This culminates in year-end short film projects that the students write, direct, and edit themselves. The collaborative and project-based nature of this class teaches many practical skills, including time management, scheduling, and logistics. This program also engages the creative side of the brain with storytelling, videography, and editing. Utilizing our state-of-the-art Mac Lab, film classes introduce students to the basics of filmmaking and then transition them into more advanced editing software.
