Student Profile: Tyson Cameron '23

Meet Tyson Cameron '23! Tyson is an active member of the Rabun Gap community. He is a member of the lacrosse program, is a leader in the Afro Student Association, an excellent student, and a prefect in Jane Dorm. Tyson is a boarding student from Durham, NC and has been at Rabun Gap since his freshman year.

Why did you choose to attend Rabun Gap?

I chose Rabun Gap because of the sense of community that I saw within my brother Jordan's friend group, and I thought I could not only be a part of that but contribute to it.

What makes Rabun Gap special to you?

Rabun Gap is special to me because of the variety of people that I've met. Because everyone has a different background at Rabun Gap, I am able to learn and experience things I probably wouldn't learn or experience at a regular public high school.

Tell us about a time at Rabun Gap where you’ve had to stretch beyond your comfort zone and how you were supported in that time.

I had to stretch beyond my comfort zone my sophomore year when I was assigned a plethora of presentations that I had to present to the class. My teachers were very understanding of my discomfort talking to a crowd but helped me to become a better public speaker. It really showed when I gave a strong presidential speech in front of the entire Upper School.

What is your favorite memory from Rabun Gap?

It's hard to pick a favorite memory at Rabun Gap because I've been here for four years, but if I had to pick it would be the back-to-school social during my junior year.

Tell us about the lacrosse program.

The lacrosse program is a very competitive outlet for students to do just that, compete! It's really nice to have a brotherhood that I can be included in and devote some of my time and energy to something more than myself.

Besides lacrosse, what clubs and extracurriculars are you a part of? What do you like most about them?

One major extracurricular I am a part of is Afro Student Association. As a student leader in the club, a couple of my peers and I host meetings where students of African descent can unite, have fellowship, and discuss ways that we can contribute to making Rabun Gap a more inclusive for those of African descent.

What is your favorite class and why?

My favorite class is AP Economics because I will definitely be able to apply what I learn in this class to real life due to my academic interests of business and marketing. Mr. Miller also has a unique teaching style that makes learning easy.

What is it like being a prefect?

Being a prefect in Jane Dorm feels generous and more like a privilege than a responsibility. I am glad to be surrounded by men and women that are like-minded in the way that we all want success for ourselves and each other. It is also lovely to be included in a community where, because we are primarily seniors, we all are working to apply to college. I consider the boys in Jane to be like my brothers and I try my hardest to treat them as such.

Which Rabun Gap teachers and/or coaches have had the biggest impact on you during your time here?

Mr. Nowack for always being a beacon of good energy on a bad day.

What advice would you give another student who is interested in attending Rabun Gap?

Some good advice I would give is to be involved. Try everything because everything is going to be new. Try your best to show up and participate in every school event or be apart of the group that is hosting the event.

How do you feel your time at Rabun Gap has prepared you for your future?

Rabun Gap has given me the ability to survive independently. The academic rigor of my curriculum gives me confidence to excel on a college level and interpret what I've learned to give myself a successful career.
