Rabun Gap Middle School Students Compete in House Competitions

On Friday, August 26, Rabun Gap middle schoolers were buzzing with excitement as they arrived at Indian Lake and listened to instructions for their annual House Marathon.

The Middle School’s house system encourages and teaches students to bond and work together.  Students in all three grade levels are grouped into “houses.” The house names honor important Rabun Gap icons —  Addie Corn Ritchie, Stiles, Frank, Van Rooyan, McHatcher, and Oliver.

The relay-style marathon featured stations in fire building, sprinting, completing math problems, swimming, kayaking, volleyball, pie eating, a word search, egg balancing, a slip and slide, and a sprint to the finish line. Every student competed in at least one section of the marathon and the houses placed their teammates in the stations based on their strengths.

Following the Marathon, students walked down to the lake to begin the annual cardboard boat regatta, featuring the boats students designed this week. The teams competed in two boat races: singles and doubles. The day ended with a game of tug-o-war, a banner competition, and an egg toss.

Head of Middle School Mr. Weston Willard, was very pleased by the hard work put forth by the students and faculty.

“We’re so excited to have completed another terrific Marathon this year. The house teams demonstrated their team building and supported one another throughout the event,” said Willard. “Thank you to Mr. Bysura and the whole Middle School faculty for making this event a success once again.”

The winner of the 2022 Marathon was Team McHatcher, Addie Corn Ritchie won the single boat race, and Team Oliver won the double boat race. Team Frank was the overall winner of the day.
