Rabun Gap to introduce new coding program for grades 3-6

Industry-leading coding curriculum is coming to classrooms at Rabun Gap.
Rabun Gap will offer coding courses created by Life is Tech! USA at the Lower and Middle Schools starting in Fall 2022. One of those programs will be Disney Codeillusion, which is an official collaboration between Life is Tech! USA and Disney. Disney Codeillusion is an interactive, gamified coding education program developed by some of the biggest names in the game development and comic book industry. Through Disney Codeillusion, students interact with real HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Processing code as they enjoy exciting, immersive experiences featuring original Disney characters and stories. The program has three focus areas: media art, web design, and game development.

"We are excited about this opportunity to advance STEAM education for our students in terms of their technology skills through the partnership with Life is Tech! USA," said Director of STEAM Dr. Maggie Renken. "This a unique program in the area of coding instruction. Not only does it provide students access to real, traditional text-based coding languages in a way that is fun and engaging, it opens doors for students to connect what they're learning to real-world, applied projects. I can't wait to launch this program next school year and see the ways in which it enhances our applied learning curriculum."

Coding instruction with Disney Codeillusion will be introduced as regularly delivered 3rd through 6th-grade instruction in a flexible way that meets each student where they are. Students will work through a set of activities in all three focus areas at an individualized pace with opportunities for "deep dives" to develop their own digital media, websites, and games as their interest demands.
