Monument Project brings applied learning to humanities classes

Our AP United States History and AP Language classes spent Trimester 1 working on monument projects! This applied learning project had students research and propose a public monument to capture the American identity. Groups prepared a research analysis paper on their proposed monument outlining the location and planning, an infographic describing the artistic merit, a digital rendering, and a marketing piece. The activity was inspired by Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s The Monuments Project.

Groups proposed monuments ranging from Native American history to the Civil Rights Movement. This year, they presented their proposals via video to Kevin and Lauren Chambers of Atlanta-based KLC Studios. Kevin, a world-renowned sculptor, and Lauren, an award-winning photographer, judged the projects, deciding which group they would want to work with if the monuments were actually being constructed. The top project was The Cherokee Story by Brooksie Tate Martin, Daniel Li, Vienne Geren, and Bénit Namahoro Jabo - great work!
