Rabun Gap students earn Shuler Award
Lucy Barry '22 and Phil Vossieg '21 have won the Shuler Award for Best Lighting Design.
Rabun Gap technical theatre students Lucy Barry ‘22 and Phil Vossieg ‘21 won a Shuler Award for Best Lighting Design in the 2020 Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards’ virtual ceremony on May 14.
The award was given to Barry and Vossieg for their work on Rabun Gap’s fall musical “The Robber Bridegroom.” Under the guidance of Artistic Director Mr. Sean Lakey, Barry and Vossieg spent the entire fall trimester overseeing the hanging, focus, color selection, and programming of the lights in Rearden Theater.
The Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards, also known as the Shuler Awards, are a state-wide celebration of the arts sponsored by the ArtsBridge Foundation. The competition includes 75 other Georgia high schools which all submit their performances for adjudication.
Lighting design requires a mixture of science and programming to creatively paint the moving tapestry on stage with color and light, The technical theatre program and the students who help lead the program at Rabun Gap have won numerous awards over the years by applying knowledge into practical application that supports and enhances the performers on stage.
In addition to this award, Rabun Gap’s “The Robber Bridegroom” received three nominations and one honorable mention in the competition this year.
