Faculty Feature: Margaret Buice, School Nurse

What made you choose to work at Rabun Gap?
I had been working as a public school nurse for several years. We moved from Savannah to Clarkesville for Sam to become rector of Grace Calvary Episcopal Church. I wanted to continue to work as a school nurse and heard that Rabun Gap needed one. I visited the campus and interviewed with June Beale. Instantly, I knew it was where I wanted to be. The mission of Rabun Gap just resonated in my soul.

What makes Rabun Gap special to you?
I particularly love that we are all in this ministry and mission together. That our actions are interrelated. That we all contribute to the body at large. That we are family.

What do you like most about caring for Rabun Gap students?
I am a nurturer by nature. I love being available to our students and getting to know them in a different way than others may. I love caring for them on a daily basis and helping them to feel better and to feel supported when needed.

What is it like working at the same school that your daughter teaches at?
It is such a treat to work at the same place and to interact with her as an adult. I am very proud of her and all my girls!

Why did you decide to get into nursing? How many years of experience do you have in it?
I always knew I wanted to “help people” in some capacity. I started nursing school immediately after high school graduation and have been a nurse for 41 years. It’s been a long, interesting career.

What were you like in upper school?
I was super involved in many activities. I always felt I needed more time to do everything I wanted to do. I was in the band, played flute and was a majorette. My favorite subjects were English, Spanish, speech and science(once I sliced my finger open bending glass in chemistry class).Volleyball was my favorite sport to play. I was very active in my church and youth group. I also had several jobs. I worked every Saturday in a dress shop, I worked after school in a doctor’s office and an insurance agency. I also did a lot of babysitting.

What is your favorite memory from the time you have worked here so far?
It’s hard to choose a favorite memory. Every day is such a gift.

What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your resume alone?
I love to hike, camp, read, refinish furniture, and ride motorcycles with my husband. I also used to be a scuba diver and an aerobics instructor.
