Arborists tend to campus orchard, teach students and faculty

New Urban Forestry of Athens and Northeast Georgia paid a visit to campus on February 22 to tend to the campus orchard and teach students and faculty how to care for it.
New Urban Forestry of Athens and Northeast Georgia came to campus on Friday, February 22 to prune the trees in Rabun Gap’s on-campus orchard and to formulate a plan to care for it moving forward.

The staff at NUF spent time training faculty and students on the proper pruning and care to ensure the maximum production and longevity of the trees.

NUF provided soil care to introduce beneficial nutrients to the soil, which will also help encourage production. They took soil samples to correct for deficiencies; these samples will help NUF cater their subsequent treatments to the specific needs of Rabun Gap’s orchard.

New Urban Forestry is the only TCIA Accredited company in our area, with Certified Arborist, Board-Certified Master Arborist, and Tree Risk Assessment Qualification credentials. They believe that by improving tree care we can improve the urban forest, that by improving the urban forest we can improve our community, and that by improving our community we improve the world.

“NUF brought equipment to reduce the height of the trees, making it easier to harvest fruit, and gave demonstrations to students and interested adults. ESP maintains the orchard and the lesson in pruning will be valuable information moving forward,” said Upper School science teacher Ms. Amy Jenkins.
