Middle School musical announced

The Rabun Gap Middle School is putting on the classic comedy musical Getting to Know...Once Upon a Mattress.  An adaptation of the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea, this one-hour version will delight and entertain children of all ages.

 

Under the direction of Performing Arts instructor Ms. Amber Miller, this show will mark the first time the Middle School has attempted a production of this scale. 

 

"I chose Getting to Know...Once Upon a Mattress because it’s a classic," Miller says.  "The songs are so catchy and fun and it’s a perfect fit for middle school performers!" 

 

Joining the fun is the Upper School orchestra program under the tutelage of Music Director, Ms. Allegra Boggess, providing live under-scoring for the entire show. 

 

"It is such a wonderful gift to have the Middle School growing and expanding the performing arts," says Sean Lakey, Head of the Fine and Performing Arts, "Some of these performers we are going to see on the stage for years to come and what a great first experience." 

 

 Our Upper School technical theater classes have also jumped in to help.  Under the guidance of Mr. Albert Fusco, Technical Director, they have aided the Middle School and their tech team in assembling sets for the upcoming production.

 

"The most challenging part of planning a musical at the Middle School has been the lack of performance/rehearsal space on the Middle School campus," says Miller. "This is why you’re likely to see knights and princesses trickling into the hallway or the gym throughout rehearsals! Our technical team designed Dauntless’ throne to look as though it were made for a toddler to emphasize his mother’s refusal to allow him to grow up. It’s hilarious. These students have been blowing me away with their talent and dedication and I cannot wait for the rest of our community to see their hard work!” 

 

Getting to know... Once Upon a Mattress runs February 21 & 22 at 5:30 PM in the Rearden Theater.  Tickets are available at the door.
