Lunar New Year celebrated by all three divisions

Lunar New Year was celebrated by all three divisions on Monday, January 27.
All three divisions started the week off strong on Monday, January 27 by celebrating Lunar New Year.

The morning started with a special performance of the Lion Dance by the Chien Hong School of Kung Fu - Atlanta during convocation. Students and faculty even had the chance to don the lion costume and perform their own version of the traditional dance that is said to help bring good luck.

Under the direction of Lower School Mandarin teacher Ms. Wang, the Lower School students spent the day learning about various aspects of the cultures that celebrate Lunar New Year, including China, South Korea, and Vietnam. International Upper School students hosted different activities throughout the Lower School, such as Chinese character name writing, face painting, chopsticks racing, traditional music, and more. In the Lower School dining room, students were taught how to make dumplings and even got to enjoy some special celebratory Lunar New Year treats.

The Middle School had a big Lunar New Year celebration, as well.  The event was led by Middle School Mandarin teacher Mr. Heselton. Lunar New Year decorations filled the halls and learning stations were set up around the school, each equipped with an activity that reflected the Lunar New Year or culture. Some of the stations included chopstick races, dumpling-making, watching a video of a Lunar New Year celebration, and writing names in Chinese characters.

Upper Schoolers started the celebration with an optional trip to the Lunar New Year Festival in Atlanta on Saturday, January 25. At the festival, students enjoyed traditional music, Taiwanese street food, and popular cultural dances such as the Lion Dance and the Dragon Dance. In Upper School Mandarin classes, led by Ms. Long, students made decorations for the Lunar New Year and decorated the Upper School and dining hall with them. Ms. Long’s students also enjoyed the opportunity to make - and taste -  pork dumplings and tangyuan, a popular sweet Chinese dessert.
