Eagles Spotlight: Lexy Davis '20, volleyball

Lexy Davis, a day student from Lakemont, GA, has been a part of the Lady Eagles volleyball program since her seventh-grade year.
The Andrew Ritchie Gymnasium has been home for volleyball player Lexy Davis ‘20 since seventh grade.

Lexy, a senior from Lakemont, GA, has been working hard on the court for the varsity Lady Eagles as a right-side hitter and right back this year. She’s been a member of the Lady Eagles volleyball program for the past six years.

In addition to her success on the volleyball court, Lexy has made a name for herself as a dancer at Rabun Gap. She’s heavily involved in the dance program, taking an elective dance class during the school day and three classes a week after school. She’s a performer in Cirque in the winter and in the spring, she helps Mrs. Heidi Spoon plan the dance concert.  Lexy is also a prefect (student leader) this year and a member of the Philosophy Club.

What is the best part about playing for the Lady Eagles volleyball team?
The best part about playing for the Lady Eagles volleyball team is that I get to play a sport I love alongside girls that have become my family.

What is the biggest challenge of being a student-athlete? What makes being a student-athlete at Rabun Gap special to you?
The biggest challenge of being a student-athlete is simply balancing all of the commitments. Although the positive far outweighs the negatives it is still difficult sometimes to maintain high grades under a tighter time frame due to practice which sometimes forces me to sacrifice sleep and leisure time. However, what makes being a student-athlete at Rabun Gap so special is that I get the opportunity to interact with members of my community in different settings. I feel more connected to my community and it provides much-needed variety to my days. As well, it makes me well rounded and teaches me self-discipline, both of which are helpful later in life.

What is your favorite memory from your time playing volleyball at Rabun Gap?
My favorite memory from my time playing volleyball at Rabun Gap is from last year when our team made an incredible save only to have Ashley (Crosby) pass the ball out, pushing it all the way to the back wall. It was so funny and we still joke about it today.

What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time, first and foremost, I like to sleep. However, I also love to spend time with my friends and family, whether it’s spending time on the lake or going out to eat -- really whatever the weekend brings.

What classes do you love here and why?
Although it is still early in the academic year, I would say my favorite classes are Ms. Buice’s AP Literature class and Ms. Flagstad’s Anatomy class. Ms. Buice taught me previously when I was a sophomore, and I am ecstatic to have her again. Her class is challenging, but our discussions are always fun and engaging. This is my first year, however having Ms. Flagstad. I love anatomy this year for many reasons. The material interests me because it is closely intertwined with what I might want to major in, as well it is very freeform because it is not an AP which I find refreshing. As well, I am always guaranteed a laugh during Ms. Flagstad’s class.

What are your plans for after high school?
My plan for after high school is to attend college, although I am not sure which one at this time. I am still undecided on what I would like to major in, however, at this time I am leaning towards a pre-med major, probably biology.
