Students extract honey from on-campus hives

This year's extraction yieled 625 pounds of honey.
The Environmental Stewardship Program and Upper School science department hosted the annual honey extraction day on Thursday, September 5, collecting 625 pounds of honey from on-campus beehives.

Upper School and Lower School classes rotated through one of the old horse barns on campus to participate in and observe the extraction, led by Mr. Woody Malot and local beekeeper Paul Vonk. Archivist David Grist also assisted with this year's harvest. The honey will be bottled and sold on campus to support Rabun Gap's Environmental Stewardship Program projects. Past projects have included solar charging stations and eco-friendly water bottle dispensers at fountains on campus.

Ms. Amy Jenkins continued the educational experience on Thursday, teaching visiting classes about bees and how they make honey. Students were able to taste different types of honey, see bees in a hive, and examine samples under microscopes.

Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School's bee program is a unique way for students to study science. Our students have completed several studies and research projects with our bee population under the direction of Mr. Malot.
