Friday Feature: Alex Cordero '22

"Being a student-athlete anywhere is hard but Rabun Gap makes it a lot easier. The teachers and staff make it so much easier to be a student and an athlete because they all care. They always check up to see if we’re doing well in all of our classes and if we fall behind they always find a way to get help."

Alex Cordero ‘22 is in his second year of school at Rabun Gap, having begun his time here at the Niles Bolton Middle School in eighth grade. Originally from New York City, Alex was living in the Dominican Republic in order to improve his baseball skills when Coach Stuart Jump first introduced him to  Rabun Gap baseball. Alex now boards at the school and is an active part of the community here; not only is he a student-athlete who plays on the varsity baseball team, he also acts as the student representative of the freshmen class on the Upper School student government.

Why did you choose to attend Rabun Gap?
I was in the Dominican Republic when Coach Jump reached out to me. After talking to Coach Jump and learning about the school, I became extremely interested and was presented with the amazing opportunity to attend Rabun Gap. I couldn’t wait to start.

What makes Rabun Gap special to you?
Rabun Gap is so unique and special because of all the people. All the students and staff are wonderful and caring and make Rabun Gap feel like a home away from home.

What do you like most about being a boarding student at Rabun Gap?
What I like most about being a boarding student is the bond that we create with other boarding students. Being a boarding student means that we spend the majority of our time with each other and that creates friendships that could last a lifetime.

What is your favorite memory from Rabun Gap so far?
My favorite memory from Rabun Gap was when we went to Asheville for the Boarder Cup and everyone went crazy for our football team. It was amazing to see us all united. We were louder than Asheville!

What is your favorite class at Rabun Gap?
My favorite class in Rabun Gap is Algebra because I’ve always had a different type of love for math. It has always come easier to me than other subjects.

Which Rabun Gap teachers and/or coaches have had the biggest impact on you during your time here?
Mrs. Shook has definitely made a huge impact on me. As my advisor, she always checks up on me to see how I’m doing and always makes sure that I’m doing good in my classes. She genuinely cares about me and all her students and is always there for me when I need her.

What has been your favorite moment or memory of playing baseball at Rabun Gap?
My favorite moment while playing at Rabun Gap was making the State Tournament for the first time since 2015.

What is it like being a student-athlete at Rabun Gap?
Being a student-athlete anywhere is hard but Rabun Gap makes it a lot easier. The teachers and staff make it so much easier to be a student and an athlete because they all care. Tell us something interesting about yourself that we don’t otherwise know.
I’m extremely interested in Greek Mythology. When I was introduced in sixth grade, I fell in love. I’ve read about six different series about it and I never got tired of reading them.

What interests do you pursue outside of the classroom?
I love to be with my family and travel. Since I play travel baseball, I’ve been around the US and even to Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico playing baseball. It has always brought my family together because we all share the love for baseball.
