Middle Schoolers lend a hand during Community Service Day

Middle Schoolers go to work on and off campus on Community Service Day.
Middle School students hit the ground running after Easter Break with a Community Service Day on April 23. Instead of heading into a normal school day, students broke into their house groups and took on projects both on and off campus.

On campus, students helped lay pine straw around the Upper School and trimmed bushes, cleaned up brush around Indian Lake, and cleared a hiking trail off of Neville Road. They also ventured into the woods to collect tree saplings which they then planted in the field behind the Middle School to start their own forest. Other students worked on projects around the school, which involved using a jigsaw to cut out sea creature shapes and painting a “touch tank” for aquatic animals.

Two groups of students ventured off campus for their community service. One group visited Rabun Paws for Life, where they cuddled puppies and kittens. Another group put themselves to work at the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, where they helped in organizing the food pantry and in filling boxes for families in need.

“Service is an important element of life at the Rabun Gap Middle School,” said Head of the Middle School Mr. Bill Rothe. “It helps to broaden our students' perspectives by opening their eyes to needs and realities outside of their own daily existence. Service creates a sense of awareness to the community around them and shows them that, even though they are young, they can make a big difference in the world.”
