Anthony Sgro will leave Rabun Gap on June 30, 2019, and Jeff Miles will begin his leadership at Rabun Gap on July 1, 2019.
Dear Rabun Gap family and friends,
We’re embarking on an exciting year for Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School. This year, we will transition from the leadership of Dr. Anthony Sgro to Mr. Jeff Miles, who was announced as our 11th Head of School in December.

Anthony Sgro will leave Rabun Gap on June 30, 2019, and Jeff Miles will begin his leadership at Rabun Gap on July 1, 2019.

Working in conjunction with our search firm, Carney Sandoe & Associates and consulting with best practices from other independent schools, the RGNS Board of Trustees has established a Transition Committee.  This committee, co-chaired by trustee Jon Barnwell ‘92 and chief operations officer Anne Forrest Prim, will seek to help support this leadership transition in such a way as to best serve the Miles family and Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School. The committee’s charge includes:
  • Engage and orient the Miles family to the unique heritage, mission, relationships, and community that make Rabun Gap so special.
  • Welcome and introduce the Miles family to the school and local community.
  • Provide ongoing counsel and support to Mr. Miles to best ensure his confidence and comfort during the transition period.
Mr. Barnwell and Ms. Prim will recruit their Transition Committee members over the next couple of weeks.  They have already started working on Mr. Miles’ Transition Plan.
It’s important to remember that Mr. Miles is still committed to his role as Assistant Head of School at Christ School through June 30, 2019. As an administrator at a boarding school, this is a 24/7 commitment. Given his responsibilities at Christ School, Mr. Miles and his family will have limited presence at Rabun Gap before the official transition on July 1, 2019.

Mr. Miles and his family came to campus on January 22 for their first official visit since he was announced as our next Head of School. Mr. Miles, his wife Kiana, and their two daughters, Alison and Lia, were able to meet students, faculty, and parents. The family was introduced to the Upper School, Middle School, and Lower School students during a division-wide assembly. Additionally, a parent and employee reception was held on campus that morning to welcome the family.

Dr. Sgro is 100% engaged and invested in leading Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School through the end of his tenure as Head of School. In addition, he is committed to Mr. Miles’ future success and to helping him transition into the new role.

We have been very blessed to have Dr. Sgro, Faulkner, and their children, Huston, Bagley, and Grazia, as a part of our Rabun Gap community. The Sgros have provided exceptional leadership for our school over the past eight years, and we wish their family the best as Dr. Sgro moves on to become Head of School at his alma mater, Asheville School. We will miss the Sgro family tremendously.

In the coming months, we will have many opportunities to celebrate the Sgros and the legacy they leave behind at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School. Further communication on specific events will come this spring.

Sincerely,

Margaret Carton, Chair
Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School Board of Trustees
