Students learn about global water crisis on World Water Day

Healing Waters International and 1040.com visited campus recently to teach students about the world water crisis.
Rabun Gap had a special visit from Healing Waters International and 1040.com on Friday, March 22 in honor of the UN's World Water Day. World Water Day helps to raise awareness of the importance of and need for sustainable freshwater resources across the globe.

Healing Waters provides special filtration systems to communities around the world that otherwise struggle with freshwater resources. 1040.com, an online e-file tax website located in Macon County, partners with Healing Waters by donating $2 for every tax return filed through them.

Ms. Kayla Huff, Director of Development and Marketing at Healing Waters and Mr. Paul Garner, Project Developer for 1040.com, set up one of Healing Water’s portable water filtration systems outside of the Evelyne Sheats Lower School on Friday morning. Students came out in groups to listen to Huff and Garner’s presentation on how the filtration system works and why it is needed in so many countries. The kids were able to use the filtration system first hand to see how it works.

“I loved being on the campus and engaging with the students about a global issue. They were engaged, asked great questions, and showed great empathy for children around the world who lack essential resources like safe drinking water,” said Huff. “These kids are our future and getting them passionate about global issues, and social justice issues is an incredible thing to be a part of.”

“Turning something boring like filing taxes into a direct impact on the global water crisis is incredible! Each day our team works to make our product more efficient and more well known,” said Garner. “Knowing that the more significant ‘Why?’  is equipping bright people around the world with the tools they need to bring safe water to their community. I can't imagine working somewhere that does not give back in this way.”
