Structured Play activities help Middle School students learn while having fun

Middle School students participate in Structured Play
Laughter and chatter could be heard in the halls and on the grounds of the Middle School on Tuesday, January 22, as students participated in various Structured Play activities.

The students were invited to join in on one of eleven activities during their Structured Play period, including flower design, yard games, knitting, and lacrosse. Each activity was hosted by a faculty member.

The Structured Play Program provides “play with a purpose.” It is not free-play, which is more creative and open-ended, like recess, which the students enjoy several times a week. Middle school students need a balance of both types of play as they navigate the world of early adolescence, which is why the Structured Play Program was created.

“We have expanded our Student Enrichment program to include sessions for structured play, where teachers lead activities that are interactive, skill-oriented, and fun,” said Ms. Holly White, Assistant Head of the Middle School, who leads the program. “These gray winter days have been brightened by the experience of teachers and students having fun together! We are excited about the positive response we have received about these great activities."
