RCMFA presents gift to music program

The Rabun County Music Festival Association, a longtime summer partner with Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School, recently presented the music department with a generous donation.
Music education continues to thrive in Rabun County thanks to the legacy of the Rabun County Music Festival.

The Rabun County Music Festival Association recently presented a generous gift of $22,206.54 to the Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School music program after closing out its final season in 2018.

The Rabun County Music Festival began in 1999 under the leadership of Gene Haywood and Sharon and John Hoppes. Since then, the group has been a major player in advancing the arts in Rabun County.

The organization hosted their summer concert series in the Rearden Theater on campus, bringing in talent from across the region, including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. In addition to the entertainment and culture they brought to Rabun County, the Rabun County Music Festival Association was committed to providing scholarships to Rabun County students pursuing education in the visual or performing arts.

“As the Rabun County Music Festival Association made the sad decision to dissolve as an organization in 2018, the Board of Directors chose to donate remaining funds to the Music Departments of Rabun County High School and Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School. Through these donations, we continue our legacy of promoting music and music education in the county and express appreciation to members of the Rabun County community who have supported the Music Festival through the years,” said Angelyn Hayes with the RCMFA.

Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School has a thriving music program in all  three divisions. Rabun Gap offers a full orchestra and choral program in the Upper School, instrumental music in the Middle School, and music and strings classes at the Lower School level.

“The Rabun County Music Festival has been an icon in the community and a great partner with Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School. It was an honor to facilitate their concerts in the Rearden Theater on campus each summer. RCMF's commitment to the arts and music education has impacted so many,” said Head of School Dr. Anthony Sgro. “We’re so grateful for their donation to our music program. This funding will help our student musicians continue to excel at all levels.”
