Mr. Jeff Miles named 11th Head of School

Mr. Miles will be the next Head of School, starting July 2019. He succeeds Dr. Anthony Sgro, who has served the school since 2011.
The Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the unanimous confirmation of Mr. Jeff Miles as the eleventh Head of School, effective July 1, 2019. He will succeed Dr. Anthony Sgro who has served the school since 2011.

“Jeff’s extensive leadership and experience in the administrative, academic, extracurricular, and community life of a boarding school make him an exceptional choice to lead Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School,” said Margaret Carton, Chair of the Board and Search Committee.

“Our school will continue to excel in every dimension under his direction and with his unwavering, heartfelt commitment to the mission.”
The appointment of Mr. Miles was the result of a competitive international search engaging some of the brightest leaders in independent school administration. The Search Committee took into consideration valuable input from the school’s stakeholders, including parents, alumni, faculty, staff, students, and trustees. According to Carton, “Jeff distinguished himself with a depth of experience, authenticity, and caliber of leadership that connected with the Rabun Gap community.”

Mr. Miles comes to Rabun Gap from Christ School in Arden, NC, where he has been involved in nearly every area of school life for close to 20 years. He started his career as a teacher, coach, and houseparent. For the past decade, he has been an integral part of the senior administration at Christ School, most recently as Assistant Headmaster. He has extensive experience in strategic planning, academics, athletics, student life, and the management of daily operations at a boarding school. His service at Christ School has been marked with notable achievements. As Assistant Headmaster, he helped grow enrollment and retention rates, oversaw daily operations, developed a successful comprehensive marketing and communications plan for the school, helped with capital campaigns, and improved the overall school culture.

“My wife Kiana and I have admired Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School for years and are so thrilled to be joining the community. What a sacred honor it is to have this opportunity to serve an incredible school with such a noble mission,” Mr. Miles said. “We are grateful to Margaret Carton and the Search Committee, the Board of Trustees, and the entire Rabun Gap family for all of the hospitality already extended and for entrusting the care of the school to us. The privilege of building upon the successful groundwork laid by Dr. Sgro is one that both humbles and inspires me to do the very best I can. I am committed to a smooth transition and, with the deepest gratitude, I look forward to the years of partnership that lie ahead.”

An independent school graduate himself, Mr. Miles was drawn to Rabun Gap’s commitment to providing opportunities to students from across the valley and around the world. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Mars Hill University and a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Michigan State University. Mr. Miles is also a graduate of the prestigious Peabody College’s Summer Institute for Independent School Leadership at Vanderbilt University.

In his role as an educator and administrator, Mr. Miles is dedicated to the development of well-rounded students who thrive in the classroom, on the athletic fields, and on the stage. He has built an extensive career in the sport of lacrosse, both as a player and coach. Most recently, Mr. Miles led his teams to two consecutive state championships in 2017 and 2018. He was selected as the North Carolina Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2017.

Mr. Miles and his wife, Kiana, have two daughters, six-year-old Lia and two-year-old Alison. The family will reside on the Rabun Gap campus and look forward to becoming a part of the community in Rabun County and neighboring areas.
