Students, faculty celebrate Diwali

Rev. Mary Demmler and Mr. Derek Demmler opened their home to the community for a Diwali celebration.
The Demmler family invited the community to their home on Wednesday, November 7, to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. The festival celebrates the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and particularly the events in the Ramayana, one of Hinduism's sacred texts. In this story, Rama, both a king and god, rescues his wife from a demon that has kidnapped her. Diwali celebrates the return of Rama and Sita to their kingdom after years of exile.

Students and faculty alike came in from the dark night into their home which was full of warm, inviting light. There were candles lit throughout the home and delicious Indian snacks were offered while the main meal was being prepared. Kainaat Trehan '20 and Vishal Sharma '19, both of Dehli, India, helped prepare some of their favorite dishes. Kainaat made poha, a flattened rice dish with onions and spices and Vishal made dosas, a crepe made from fermented dough made rice and lentil flour. The dosas were stuffed with potatoes cooked with spices. Many faculty members also brought dishes to share, including daal, sambar, tikka masala, salad, naan, and the dessert rasgulla.

Rev. Mary Demmler took a few moments before the meal to welcome everyone to their home and Mr. Sanders shared a brief explanation of the holiday to all the guests. Everyone then eagerly lined up to enjoy the delicious savory Indian dishes and sweet desserts.

"Having the students sharing their traditions and foods and learning from one another is a beautiful act of worship and we have been honored and privileged to host these gatherings. My favorite part of the night was watching Kainaat and Vishal in the kitchen, cooking for their friends and FaceTiming their moms," shared Rev. Demmler.

The next dinner they will host will be Hanukkah in December.
