Community helpers visit kindergarten classes

Dr. Steven Arbitter '86 and Sgt. Sam Orwig recently visited with the kindergartners to give lessons on being community helpers.
The kindergarten classes are learning about community helpers and recently had visits from Dr. Steven Arbitter '86, veterinarian at Rabun Animal Hospital, and Sgt. Sam Orwig, a police officer from the Gainesville Police Department.

The first visit was from Dr. Arbitter, who brought two special guests - his dogs. The children were delighted to learn about what it's like to be a veterinarian and gain some tips on caring for their pets, all the while enjoying snuggling with the dogs. Dr. Arbitter has a long history with the school, having grown up here as a faculty child and graduating from the school in 1986. His children, Mark '20, Allen '26, and Wyatt '26, currently attend the school.

Sgt. Sam Orwig wowed the crowd of kindergartners with his police car and other gadgets. The kids enjoyed learning about what a career as a police officer is like and what police officers do every day. They were thrilled when given the opportunity to try on a bullet-proof vest, see Sgt. Orwig's handcuffs, and explore his police car. They even got to turn on the lights and siren, which caused a big stir! Sgt. Orwig's children attend the Lower School - Thomas '30 and Wyatt '31.

We are grateful to these community helpers for taking time out of their schedules to invest in the kindergartners. This type of experiential learning is so beneficial for our students.
