Eagles win the "Boarder" Cup!

The "Boarder" Cup will be staying at Rabun Gap for another year!
The entire Upper School body made the trip up to Asheville School Saturday, October 13, for the second annual “Boarder” Cup. Hopes were high for a victory and a desire to keep the Cup at Rabun Gap, where it has been since the Eagles defeated the Blues last year.

At convocation the day before, Dr. Anthony Sgro, who will be Headmaster at Asheville School next year, made sure to let the students know that he was 100% behind the Eagles and challenged them to fight to keep the Cup. The students had the opportunity to sing the school cheer in preparation for the coming day. Students held a “Game Day Live” event in the Upper School Courtyard where team captains were interviewed about their seasons and asked about their expectations for the following day.

The students brought “white out conditions” up to Asheville School by wearing all white to support their teams and many had even painted their faces in school colors for the event. The cross country, volleyball, boys’ soccer, tennis, and football teams were set to compete to help defend the Cup. Points were assigned to each team that won and the school with the greatest number of points was to be awarded the Cup; JV wins would equal 3 points and Varsity wins would be awarded 5 points. There was a great amount of energy and excitement as the various Eagles teams fought for victory, and wins were secured: JV girls’ volleyball won 2-0, Varsity volleyball won 3-0, JV boys’ soccer won 4-1 and Varsity boys’ soccer won 8-1.

Tensions were high going into the final game of the day where the football teams would play. The total score was tight - 16 for Rabun Gap and 15 for Asheville School. The football game would decide the “Boarder” Cup winner. The entire community from Rabun Gap, including the other Eagles teams who had played throughout the day, gathered together in the new stadium at Asheville School. There was a tremendous spirit of camaraderie and school pride as the Eagles and the Blues took the field. After an exciting game, the Eagles swept Asheville School with a score of 49-31. With the additional points that Rabun Gap earned in this final victory, they were awarded the “Boarder” Cup with a score of 21-15.

Director of Athletics Mr. Dale Earnhardt said,“ There was a great atmosphere on Saturday from both schools. In only our second year of the ‘Boarder’ Cup battle, I see both school communities embracing the competition and displaying great school spirit.  I was proud of all our teams for how they competed, and extremely proud of how the student body cheered for our teams throughout the day. It was a great day to be an Eagle. The best part is that the ‘Boarder’ Cup stays in Georgia for another year!”

Asheville School was an incredible host for the Rabun Gap community. The students had the opportunity to enjoy their new sports facilities and to get to know some new people. Asheville School also treated the Rabun Gap community to dinner, just as Rabun Gap had done the year before when the event was held on the Rabun Gap campus. The “Boarder” Cup will proudly be displayed in the Gym lobby trophy case until next year, when the “Boarder” Cup Challenge will take place again!

“I am incredibly proud of the Eagles for securing the 'Boarder' Cup for yet another year,” said Head of School Dr. Anthony Sgro. “I’m also proud of the students and faculty who came out to support our teams. The sense of camaraderie and school spirit throughout the day, especially in the stands during the football game, was palpable and speaks highly of the supportive and encouraging community that Rabun Gap is known for.”
