Ms. Alice Jump runs mile for 1000th consecutive day

Upper School math teacher marks her 1000th consecutive day of running.

Upper School math teacher Ms. Alice Jump has reached a milestone in her running career, hitting her 1,000th consecutive day running on Wednesday, September 26.

Ms. Jump is a favorite teacher among students and faculty alike. She is someone who people find fun to be around and is adept at encouraging and empowering those around her. Her family, husband Mr. Stuart Jump, Upper School Humanities teacher, and children, Natalie Jump ‘18 and Graham Jump ‘18, have been a part of the Rabun Gap community since 2006.

Ms. Jump’s streak of running started 3 years ago in 2015. On September 26, she celebrated the milestone of hitting her 1000th consecutive day,  a total mileage of about 1,200-1,300 miles.

It feels like time has passed very quickly.  When I started ‘the streak’ my kids were 15 years old.  They have just turned 18 and even running every day I still wonder where the time has gone,” recalled Ms. Jump. “I started running at least a mile a day because I work at Rabun Gap and knew big blocks of time were hard to find.  I had been walking 4 - 5 miles a day, but that wasn't realistic during the school year. I felt I could find 10 minutes every day so the little cardio burst would eventually be beneficial. At the same time, I also decided to do 25 push ups and at least 100 sit ups every day  (I usually do 200 - 300 and am still looking for my six pack). I have managed to do that as well but not every day. If I miss a day, I just double up the next day.”

When asked how she has stayed motivated for so long, she says it’s because it’s just something she has to do, like brushing her teeth.

“Some days are easier that others, even if it's just a mile, but to not run is not an option,” she shared.

She also said that her fellow faculty members who are on streaks of their own keep her motivated.

“I wouldn't want to give them a reason to stop,” said Ms. Jump.
