Middle School celebrates with House Marathon

The House Marathon is the kickoff event of the school year for the Middle School.

Indian Lake was filled with excitement and energy Saturday, August 28, as Rabun Gap Middle School students ran the annual House Marathon.

The House Marathon is the kickoff event of the school year for the Middle School.

The Middle School’s house system was implemented last school year and encourages camaraderie and teamwork among Middle School students. Students in all three grade levels are grouped into “houses”  — similar to those described in the Harry Potter series. The house names honor important Rabun Gap figures. This year’s houses are: Addie Corn Ritchie, Stiles, Frank, Van Rooyan, McHatcher, and Oliver.

Mr. Johnathan BySura organizes the marathon race, which includes unique stations that involve each Middle School student and draw on a variety of skill sets. The relay-style marathon had stations in fire building, completing math problems, swimming, kayaking, running, pie-eating, puzzle solving, volleyball serving, and egg balancing.

The first place winner for this year’s marathon was the Van Rooyan House.

Bill Rothe, Head of Middle School, shared his gratitude with students and faculty commenting that "this was one of best starts of the school year I have every been apart of."

"We are lucky to have such dedicated and engaged teachers who love working in middle school.  We are off to a great start!" Mr. Rothe said.
